Creating Harmonious Relationships
Posted by spiritual4u | Posted on 11:03 AM
This commentary will deal with the creation of harmonious relationships, where one’s vision is on development of one’s highest potential, while having regard for others as well as giving cooperation to create a world of justice and harmony. This infers that the vision of everyone is to develop the full potential of the inner resources, a condition of the soul where the "mind" and "intellect" is in complete harmony. In this stage of development, it becomes easier to appreciate humanity and create a harmonious atmosphere where it becomes almost natural to think and act with "selfless motivation" rather than be "shylock in nature".
Innate Skills and Specialties
It general, it is almost natural for people to exploit and develop their innate skills and specialties to create goods and provide services that add value to the world. By doing so, people earn a living by trading or exchanging these assets to satisfy their basic needs of food, shelter and clothing. The intermediate step in this process is to acquire wealth to provide for their families, but the ultimate goal is to be comfortable, satisfied and contented. This goal translates to a core vision and that is to be happy with themselves and the rest of the world. Anything short of this happiness is the stage of being desirous of other attainments to reach this goal. Therefore, it appears that happiness is the ultimate aim and highest potential of man.
Vision to Reach Highest Potential
The vision to reach one’s highest potential is to have complete control over the five senses of sight, sound, smell, touch and taste. In addition, it is necessary to conquer the vices anger, greed, ego, lust and attachment. This stage allows the elements of air, water, earth, fire and ether to serve you.
Method to Accomplish Vision
Have the realization that you are a soul and the body is your vehicle to play your part in this eternal world drama, through purity in thoughts, words and actions. The aim is to live within the "spiritual code of conduct" as prescribed in the scriptures. In simple terms, "take no sorrow and give no sorrow".
Creating a Short Cut to attain your Vision
While performing your duties and responsibilities, always remember that you are a soul and the rest of humanity is but your brothers and sisters with the fatherhood of One God.
Happiness is a State of Contentment
Happiness is a peaceful state of the mind in which you derive satisfaction and contentment from your thoughts, words and actions that further bring benefit to society, to the environment. Happiness is to see no evil, hear no evil and speak no evil and to constantly see the strengths and not dwell in the weakness of yourself and others. Happiness is to be ever contented with whatever you have to satisfy your basic needs, and not to have desires for created wants. Happiness is to earn wealth embracing the value of truth and to acquire health by allowing the mind to function under the power of peace. Happiness is to constantly derive pleasure from work, play or prayer. Happiness is to derive the same pleasures from giving as well as receiving
Selfless Motivation in Careers brings Happiness
Some people think that to amass wealth is happiness, while others believe that wealth cannot buy happiness. Some even venture to say that money is the root of all evil, but I will not venture to debate whether it means too little or too much or none of it. Yet there are others who pursue particular careers or professions to achieve happiness. There are some noble professions such as nursing, which deal with the well being of people, and these jobs demand respect and bring great happiness.
However, it is guaranteed that what is sweet for some may be poison for others. There are instances where the very thing that once brought joy and happiness later brings great sorrow. This introduces the notion that pleasure and pain, anger and tolerance and humility and arrogance are as relative as heat and cold. This brings a dialogue as to limited and unlimited or temporary and permanent happiness.
Temporary and Permanent Happiness
As we continue this dialogue on happiness, it appears that happiness is nurtured by mind, body, health and wealth. There is a famous saying that says, "when your wealth is lost something is lost; when your health is lost something is lost; but when your mind is lost, all is lost". This seems to say that different occasions, events and occurrences attract different levels of happiness. It also infers that the happiness created is time dependent. Wealth and health are temporary and it brings temporary happiness, but the state of the mind can bring temporary to permanent happiness.
The Trojan Horse of Sensual Pleasures
Sensual pleasure is tantalizing. There is enchantment as long as you have desire for something. However, the moment you are in possession of that object, the charm and enthusiasm vanishes. Man goes to great lengths planning and deceiving to get the 'happiness" that he wants from sensual objects. He gets himself entangled in the meshes of sorrow in his quest for sensual pleasures. Each time however, he pledges that if he gets this desire fulfilled, he would be ever contented in life and would live happily ever after. Man does not realize that these objects are perishable and evanescent, finite and conditional in time and space. Repeatedly, he fails to get the desired happiness from them.
Sensual pleasure comes from emotion, but bliss comes from self-realization. Bliss is really an innate quality of the soul. Pleasure derived from sensual objects is temporary and fleeting whereas bliss is eternal and everlasting. Pleasure is mixed with pain whereas bliss is constant happiness. Pleasure depends on the gratification of the body by being a slave of the five senses, whereas bliss is generated from the innate values of the soul. Balance is the key to a happy and cheerful life. Never let any situation to run into excess. People die due to shock from extreme depression as well as from extreme joy. The mind can never be calm in excessive merriment. Let the mind be cheerful, but calm.
The Stresses Created by Wealth, Power & Desires
There is nothing wrong to amass unlimited wealth honestly or to acquire power morally. It is always a question of the motive of acquisition and the use of same. Then why today, a worldly man is always drowning in sorrow. He is ever struggling to get something.... money, power, status....and is always anxious as to whether or not he can get it. Then, when he is actual possession of the thing he so passionately longed for, he becomes even more anxious for fear he should lose it. This is the essence of stress that leads to ill health and misery. And, although we are aware of it, we cannot control the desire to chase after it. Each time, we believe it would bring us ultimate happiness and so we could live in glory forever. Also, there are many sayings that remind us of this reality ("the grass is greener on the other side" or " what a web we weave when we set out to deceive"), but our thoughts are made greedy, while the intellect remains weak.
Expectations and Desires
Expectation is borne out of created desires and it is the root of stress and unhappiness. We often set ourselves expectations without the consultation of others and get disappointed with others and ourselves when those expectations do not materialize. Worst of all, we set expectations of other people without their consent. We silently worry ourselves sick, and get hurt, angry and depressed. The worst case is when you replay the reasons over and over thinking if this had happened the expectations would have been fulfilled. There is no way that you can alter past events. What has passed is past. A good approach is to do the best you can with that which is under your control and to send good wishes to that which is not under your control. There is nothing you can do about what is not under your control. If we are to have expectations, we should also retain the option to review these expectations and sensibly accept the alternatives. To accomplish this, we must be prepared to enjoy the process and accept the outcome, whether we like it or not.
Happiness is one of the innate values of the soul. It grows out of peace of the mind. Happiness cannot be bought, sold or traded. It is the natural inheritance of those whose actions, attitudes and attributes are pure and selfless. Happiness is the positive power of thought. It is to perform actions that bring benefits to yourself, to others, to the environment. Happiness is to be in a continuous state of contentment and to be indifferent to pain and pleasure. Money can buy a book but not a brain. Money can buy food but not the power to digest. Money can buy a bed but cannot bring sleep. Money can buy a house but not a home. Money can buy a medicine but not health. In remembrance of God alone, we can experience super-sensuous joy, quite apart from joy of senses.
Respect to Humanity and the Environment
Respect is to honor worth. It is to have esteem, to value, to regard and to appreciate all life forms, nature and the environment. Foremost then, we should respect the Creator, the Creation and the Self. Therefore respect can be seen as the foundation stone of everything we do in our lives. To respect is to have love for all human beings and to understand the role of each one. Respect must come from within, not from without, for respect is a virtue and it cannot be legislated. To develop respect or any other virtue, we first have to transform the self. Respect cannot be bought or demanded, it must be earned. "Do unto others as you would have them do unto you" should be the watchwords to weigh respect. Thus we should not insult, defame or see weaknesses in others, we should appreciate their strengths. We must respect others, the old, the young, sick, poor, other cultures, ideas, equals, time and facilities.
Cooperation leads to Orderliness
The entire universe operates on orderliness and you have to emulate that specialty constantly. The human body is so complex and yet so orderly because every part cooperates in total harmony. The body is designed to function automatically and with minimum maintenance if fed with the proper food and right thoughts. If treated badly the body will rebel through sickness or untimely death. The basic intelligence coded in each cell is suppressed or fooled and they withdraw their cooperation causing chaos and confusion. The body functions will fail, as they are accustomed to work in the awareness of being orderly.
Cooperation and Responsibility
Cooperation is a two-way transaction. You have a dual responsibility to give cooperation as well as to accept cooperation. This is the true concept of harmonious and honest cooperation. When you give cooperation, this service must contain a deep, pure unconditional love from the inner mansions of the heart and soul. It must generate a selfless love, a divine love, a love that embraces honesty, tolerance and self respect. You should have no personal desires in sharing the sweetness of the fruits of its success, or to have any dividends or rewards. The moment you cooperate and give service or add value to the cause, at that point you have taken your blessings and you consider your effort completed and irreversible.
On the other hand, when you take, accept or use cooperation from others, this should be accepted with love and great humility. The outcome or rewards of the cause should be for the greater benefit of all. In other words, you play the role of a facilitator or trustee. In the process, if you have to use or enjoy some of the cooperation in the form of resources or services for your own self, then the aim and objective should be to multiply, enhance or add value to the resources or service used. Cooperation therefore is to have a social responsibility for the maintenance, protection and upliftment of the creation, through other souls, the environment and the elements.
